Sending Good Vibes June 2021

Summer of peace and love. Since our first Summer drop is inspired by a psychedelic journey, we thought we’d take a deeper dive. This edition of Sending Good Vibes is your guided path to enlightenment with rainbow vibes and magic mushrooms. We hit the road in a retro VW bus, show you how to tie-dye clothes, take you on a tour of a psilocybin retreat, teach you how to make adaptogenic mushroom tarts, all while listening to a psychedelic playlist. Awake but dreaming. Man, what a trip.

Piece out. L.A.-based baker, gardener and artist Loria Stern teaches us how to make an adaptogenic mushroom tart. “This is a perfect summer recipe as it requires minimal baking, is refreshing to eat on a hot day and better yet, will leave you feeling healthy and energized as it's infused with adaptogenic mushroom powders and it's gluten and grain free, dairy free, vegan and unrefined sugar free.”

Home is where you park it. Ride along with van life influencer Kit Whistler, who traded her apartment for a 1976 VW bus in 2012. Kit talks about her hippie-inspired travels all across the country – from the red rock deserts of Utah to the lush greenery of the Northwest – and her quest to lead a more joyful life.

On the road. In 1964, Ken Kesey, author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and his Merry Band of Pranksters kickstarted the psychedelic ’60s when they set out on an acid-fueled trip across America in a colorful bus called “Furthur.” Stories from the bus were featured in Tom Wolfe’s 1968 book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and a documentary about the journey, Magic Trip, was released in 2011.

Make love not war. In the 1960s and ’70s, political poster workshops sprang up across the U.S. With guidance from Malaquias Montoya, a leader in the Chicano Art Movement, student activists at UC Berkeley’s Political Poster Workshop created hundreds of colorful DIY-style posters that captured the spirit of rebellion.

“The feminist movement of the ’60s and ’70s reminded the world that women have always played important historical roles, despite often being overlooked,” reads a 2021 article by Stacker. “Women’s History Month in March and the commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8 allow us to celebrate the strides women have made across social, economic, political and cultural spectrums. Observing milestones in women's history also reminds us of the steps still required to achieve true gender equality... Women have left marks on everything from entertainment and music to space exploration, athletics and technology.” Find out what milestone in women’s history was achieved in your birth year.

The fungus is among us. Artist Matthew Craven is drawn to subjects that reflect the natural world. His mushroom collages are a slight departure from his geometric patterns, but both are sourced from outdated textbooks. “I dig for used books like others dig for records,” Matthew says. “It's a practice that gets me out of my studio and takes my work in sometimes unexpected directions.”

Go with the flow. For filmmaker and artist Daniel Mercadante his Rainbow Road series is about experimenting with imagination and magic. The series started as a playful study after moving from California to New England, where he was inspired to add rainbow lights to the cold blue evenings.

Groovy. Giles Newman’s mushroom spoons are a piece of functional art. Each is hand carved from a single piece of Silver Birch, which was responsibly sourced from wind-fallen wood. All of Newman’s pieces are individually designed and therefore no two are alike.

Far out. Independently published from 1963 to 1973 (first in its namesake Australia, then in the U.K.), Oz was definitive of the international counterculture movement of its time. Consistently prosecuted on charges of obscenity, the zine was a pioneer in exploring issues including police brutality, gay rights and recreational drug use.

In living color. Originally published by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in connection to its 1975 joint-exhibition The Rainbow Show, this collection of essays and illustrations devoted to rainbows explores the meaning of color (physically and metaphysically) and its impact on the human psyche throughout the ages.
